Just wanna share my satisfying moment of clarity. I have a nice studio with great gear and basically I've been happy and never had trouble getting the results I want. I'm a producer/songwriter/engineer and the studio is for my personal use only. Still I got these moments when I thought I need this and that piece of gear to improve the quality, and, you know how it goes.
I started to look around the studio and seriously going through every single piece of gear. Every unit that had not had the power turned on in a year, all those "well, I might need it...after all it has a weird sound that might be useable once in ten years..."-pieces of gear and all gear I've never liked 100% had to go. Once decided, no hesitation. I sold everything off and completed the "chain" of important stuff with a good pair of monitors. Have the mics, pres, converters and comps already. I also spent more time with every piece of gear left in the studio to really dig into how they sound, what they're good and bad at doing. I came to (listening to my gear with "new, fresh ears" through my new monitors) that I don't need anything new. Thought I needed a new reverb. Wrong, I needed to tweak my existing ones with an open mind for a couple of hours. I used different gear for stuff that I always do in a certain way. And so on. Very refreshing, it's like having new gear all over. So now I have maximized the performance of my studio and myself operating it and the "need new gear"-urge is gone. And now all the crap is cleaned out and everything left is high-end gear. And I got more space... Happy new year everyone !

That is perhaps great advice even for those still "gearing up".

Avoid temptation before you buy and ask...."will I REALLY need/use it?"..."could it be sitting there for a year, unused, collecting dust?"
Now, will our wives get inspired and sell all those shoes and jewlery not being used ? ...taking that money and flying us to an exotic island for some quality time??
:o 8-)

Good for you. 8-) There really is something wonderful about

There really is something wonderful about *focusing* on a select group of tools rather than racks and racks of blur...
And there's nothing like the cleansing feel of a nice "garage sale."
Except maybe a sack of White Castles...
Happy New Year to ya.
