This would be a part of a business that a few people (including me) are currently in negotialitions about with investors . Main work would be in high end post for Film and TV, but we are also looking to have music recording capabilities. We are working on a £2.5 to £3 million budget, but that would include the price of property (About £1.5 million including all the refurbishment/furniture and treatment) and about another £1million on the Post Side/Staff/Initial startup costs etc etc, so we were kinda looking at the £200-300k mark for the music studio equipment leaving £200k to spread around the budget to "hopefully" soak up any shortfall/problems.

I was thinking that we could get that kit for about £250k (it's currently for sale), with about £15-25k on testing and evalution (to make sure it all works)

If you get all that stuff for £200K, you're a darn good negotiator. At £300K, still a good buy if it is all in good/very good condition and you can transfer the ownership/rights for all the software.

Now, lets talk more specifically about the console.

1) Whatever you do, and whatever you're prepared to pay for it, check with SSL first. Call them, ask to speak to service or the the UK sales guy, and give them the serial number. It used to be a FOC information service. They will contact you within in a few days with full service and sales history of that particular console. There weren't many original 64 frames made either. Hopefully, that particular console has a patch pre-wired for 80 channels (worth more and easier to expand in the future).

2) You mention "high end post for Film and TV" and "music recording capabilities".
My brains tells me that the console would be used on the music side of the business. One "could" use it for post and film, but quite frankly, there are many better options around this day and age.
If you intend to use the console for music recording and mixing, my intuition tells me that you may want to use it for "scoring" also. Great choice, but you may need to add the "film panning" (basically giving you a hard center) option to it. That's a £200+ retrofit per channel for the parts - labour is straightforward. You'll need to think about monitoring as well, and possibly stems (US word for "pre-mixes"). Check with SSL.

3) A J-Series is no joke to install and commission. You're looking at 7-10 days for a second-hand one, including re-assembly. There might be a few free-lance engineers in your country with the experience to do this, but you may ask a quote to SSL for the job as well. Yes, they'll be more expensive than a third-party engineer, but given the overall investment, it might be worth it.

4) Are you aware that power dissipation of the console is about twice that of an equivalent 4k in the control room? Plan ahead ;)

5) If you haven't made-up your mind yet for the film console, you might as well tell that to the SSL people. They might all the sudden find a renewed energy and motivation to help you with the info and the quotes about the 9k ;)
