Some Recommendations

If you don't mind buying used, the TRB5II is an excellent bass. Quiet electronics, balanced sound, good response across all the strings. One of these will set you back $500 to $800. The new TRB1005's are nice but I find the electronics a little crispy / edgey compared to the TRB5.

If that's a bit too much dough and you want new, the new BB series 415 and 615 are well thought of in a better than entry level bass.
