I'm oblivious as to how this software works! Do you do all of the sequencing within the DFH software?

Nope You sequence in your sequencer/midi track. What we do is

You sequence in your sequencer/midi track.
What we do is use a Roland V kit to record the midi hits, using the onboard sounds to monitor, then trigger the DFH sounds using the alredy recorded midi track.. You can then process and mix the drums as you wish.
