As per Kurt's post with requirements... may I also add that if you are wise, you will not go with "minimum" requirements....

Those requirements are specific to the program itself, and not indicative of additional plugs or vsti's that you might want to add down the road. Pro Tools can only give you the specs it requires to run its program. They have no idea what types of processors you'll be using, how many tracks, how dense the production you'll want to do. Additional plugs and vsti's can tax your system big time.

You'll want to make sure that whatever system you end up with will be powerful enough to handle the load of multiple tracks running multiple processors and plugs, or as new technology presents itself in the form of soft synths, processors, etc.

What kind of ProTools? What kind of I/O are you using?

There are three basic issues with ProTools on Windows. The first is your system has to be "clean", because ProTools is a hog. You shouldn't have anything else running, no internet, no Norton security, nothing like that. Let ProTools take over 100% of your machine, it's happiest that way.

Second, your system has to be fast enough to meet ProTools' internal clocking requirements. If the audio can't keep up, your ProTools will eventually stop, but if the midi can't keep up the ProTools may or may not stop. The best thing to do is get fast processors and a ton of memory.

And third, the more software plug-ins you're using the more your machine gets taxed. If you have the outboard hardware only the RTAS plug-ins will tax your CPU, but if you're using an MBox they all will.

A good computer is mandatory for ProTools. I have PT-9 running on a Sony Vaio laptop, but it barely runs, and it runs out of plug-ins rather quickly. You can't do 16 tracks worth of plug-ins, the CPU is too slow. Two CPU's is probably better than one, for that purpose. Something in the 980/990 class, ...
