I have an Echo Layla that I am syncing to my BRC that runs 3 ADATS. Now, they do lock, and I can control the Layla. However, doing some testing, I recorded 2 tracks of audio onto the ADATs and 2 tracks of audio onto Layla. I hear what I would call Major phase shifs when I play them back together. I am just starting to work with smpte, MTC so any help would be great. Thanks John

well..before you go and buy a bnc or attach one..are you transfering via analog or digital? Which Layla is this? The 24bit or the 20bit model?
Are you giving the machines enough pre-roll time? I take it you are using MIDI cables to hook up to the BRC or are you using SMPTE to control everything? Make sure you are only sending one type of code to each device..if you send one device multiple sync codes it will tend to get confused and not know what to chase to and try and chase both. Give us a little more info and let's see what we can do for ya

Okay, now I am understanding a little. I do have BOTH the 48khz and the MIDI out going to Layla (20 bit). Will MIDI out provide both sync and machine control? Maybe that's where I went wrong. I am treating the Layla like 8 more tracks. I.E. giving me 32 tracks all together. I hope that clarifies..John

Well, there's clock and there's timecode and these two are not necessarily the same. The 48K BNC clock out of the BRC to the Layla gets you spitting out data at the same rate, but if you are using the BRC's MTC you could be in trouble. I don't know if it's something peculiar about the BRC or MTC in general but we could never get consistent results transfering multiple passes of ADAT tracks to PT/Digi001 using the BRC as the MTC source. A JLCooper DataSync got us a lot closer but even then it wasn't spot on (sample accurate) and on some occasions it was WAY off. We ended up aligning groups of track by hand referenced to a click.
I think I remember somewhere that you'll get no closer than one quarter frame accuracy from MTC sync which at best is maybe 1-2 msec. Sounds like a good number for the phasing and comb filtering you're hearing.
The only sample-accurate solution I can think of would be an audio interface that implements the ADAT sync port like the Frontier Designs Dakota/Tango combo. There may be others as well.
Good luck!
