I think this is one of those rare moments where Apple is steering the industry for Wintel instead of the other way around. After years of unsuccessfully marketing the Itanium as a business machine, I think the G5 is going to open the doors for 64 bit computing everywhere. Windows XP 64-bit ed. is still marketed as a comercial grade OS, but I think the Athlon XP64 (along with peer pressure from the G5) is going to encourage Microsoft to turn XP into a fully functional 64bit OS.
As far as the audio industry's concerned, it certainly helps that Apple has taken the leap. Now Digidesign HAS to make a 64bit version, and that means the rest of the industry will, too, in the next few years. Maybe the end of dedicated PCI hardware? (. Nah!)

I'd wait for that addition to hit the market and then see what the comparisons will be like at that point.
Also have the overprices G5's even hit the street yet? Has anyone done a real world joe shmoe test yet?! Not a professional reviewer but an average joe computer user.....

I'm sure that the guys over at the Sonikmatter Logic Audio Forum will quickly start posting achievable track playback and plug-in numbers (number of native Platinum Verbs ...) . While that is not a purely scientific test (e.g. LA 6 not available for PC ...) it gives a really good idea about what is possible with the machine.

Yup, there are alot of new things coming out that I'm looking forward to. PCI Express being one of them (and Serially Attached Scsi). It's interesting that Apple went to PCI-X with the G5. I wonder how their new PCI architecture compares to PCI Express? I know their PCI bus timing is all the way up to 1 Ghz with the G5.

it might surprise people but Apple has always been steering the computer industry, as funny as it may sound. While a lot of their current hardware seems like PC world's yesterdays news (ATA66 drives, PC133 SDR and PC2100 DDR Memory, etc.) they have certainly been a leader in terms of new features, especially connectivity. They were first to include 1394 Firewire in their chipset (and had stable solutions), they had the first wireless LAN connections out there, included Bluetooth and they continue to push the envelope in that respect.
On a related note, I am personally pissed off because I am running Logic Audio on a PC (Apple discontinued support after they acquired Emagic about one year ago) so I will have to switch to a Mac if I want further upgrades (already can't get Version 6 :p .
