Been trying to post this here for a while. It lands up in the DAW forum... strange...

:

I was wanting to know if all soundcards mantain the purity of digital
signals fed into them ?

Say I have an entry level 4 I/O recording interface. (I actually have
one) which has SPDIF input and output. I purchase a good 2 channel ADDA
external converter. Feed the soundcard with this converter and monitor
off it too.

Will now, this comparitively cheap card give performance equavilant to
a better card, like an RME, being fed with the same SPDIF signal ?

thank you.

sidhu

p.s. the card in question is the esi audiotrak maya 44 mkII.

ran a test using RMAA. here are the results :

please comment.

the dynamic range offered by these converter is a poor 90dB. But i
figure there have been ppl. doing a lot of good work before 107+ dB
converters became norm. Just an afterthought.

once the signal is digital it stays digital as in 1's and 0's but if it goes from say spdif to lightpipe it might be transcoded or brought from 16bit to 24bit just to make the transcoding go smother smother. can this effect the signal yes it can but digital degridation sounds alot difrant than analouge degridation usual resulting in a strange out of phase high swerling sound

I understand.. The signal will stay 24bit. Unless it is first turnacated and then brought back again, highly unlikely. I was worried about not getting the clock right. The card in question does not have a dedcated WC input, and will clock from the digital source (toslink or SPDIF)

so does it make good sence to stick with card (i get immediate 4 I/O) and later purchase a good AD/DA converter. Or do I get it exchanged (i have that option) for an Echo or M-aduio?

thanks

The reason is probably because the moderators of this forum feel that the people in the DAW forum can answer the question better .. so they move the topic ... Sometimes we rename topics as well to facilitate better indexing for search functions and so that they have "keywords" for the Google search engine. Keep an eye out for that too!

It's all the same BB and most of us read all the forums by using the
"Posts Since Your Last Visit" feature ... so it's unlikely that any specific forum will yield faster results ... only better ones, from people who are better equipped with the knowledge to answer them.
