WTF ... I just heard 100 Laurels , What am I missing ?

I hear only Laurel, too. Others swear up and down it says Yanny.

It's about neuroprocessing of sound by the brain and how others hear things differently. I thought it would be a useful bit of knowledge here on RO.

As a side note: Yanni, the musician, says he only hears "Yanny". LOL!

My wife hears Yanny. Supposedly that means she has young ears. I wish.

If I put the slider to the left I hear Laurel, if I put it to the right it's Yerry... ;)

I hear yanny and I've tried it on full range and laptop speakers. Very interesting. Makes me wonder or think about how some people process sentences different as well.

I have hearing aids in each ear that boost the upper range to 8K for me. Aids in it's yanny, out, yup you guessed it, taking them out it is absolutely Laurel!

This is post is actually quite interesting for a variety of reasons.

Null/ freq cancellation > Phase cancellation?

On the radio, laptop and full-range speakers, all I hear is a bad recording of Yanny . I wonder what recording gear they used to track. Its definitely not tracked very well. Never the less...
Apparently the actual word recorded is Laurel but the combined voice (freq of the voice-over talent) and the word Laurel together, lets also not forget heavy compression after the fact...
could we suspect frequency cancellation is happening with high freq under certain conditions, thus certain people under certain playback systems are or aren't hearing the remainder of audio left, thus some hear Laurel. some hear Yanny.

The people so far who have been analyzing this say... people with compromised speakers or hearing loss hear Laurel.

what's happening is masking. there was a report explaining this on this on the news last night. Laurel is hi pass filtered and Yanny is low pass filtered. depending on sensitivity of the listeners hearing and what kind of frequency response the playback exhibits determines what is "heard".

I heard both words in the neutral position but only after sliding to both of them to identify the frequencies being used in each punctuation. Right from the start it was Yanny.

I worked with a guy many moons ago that made a lot of coin "backmasking" things into various ads, movie trailers ....particularly political ads. He did his in the analog world however.....Ahhh the tricks he knew....
