seagate Barracuda drives are my faves. I have two of them in my DAW. They are very quiet and haven't let me down.

I'd recommend the Western Digital Caviar WD2000BB/JB. A little larger than you are looking for but still can be had for about $100 CDN here in Canada. According to the benchmarks, it's the top ATA 100 performer.

EDIT: Forgot to answer your question. No, SATA cannot be installed on an IDE controller. On the other hand, I do believe that you can by SATA PCI cards.

Just bought four new Seagate Barracudas, 3 40's, 1 80gb. locally for around 70 dollars apiece(No price searching.). They run as cool as the case temp - just a few degrees above room temp and I cannot hear them operating(At least not over the noise of the fans and I run up to 3 at a time!). Speaking of temps, I run the drives in removable drawers that should be "hotter", but, as stated, no prob...

The drives they replaced were running at over 130F and one died completely, the other two were on there way out, after only a couple of years...

Will get a couple more as budget allows.

Just to say, I would have no problem buying Western Digital either - good stuff - I no longer use it, but the 20 gig WD I have from 1998(24/7 for 6 years!) still works fine... The one of the BIG 3 that I left out, I would avoid...

I appreciate the great input from all the gang. Very helpful to us folks trying to take the next step to some higher performance home studios.

I'll chime in with a plug for Maxtor Diamond series. I have a pile of them in various sizes, never had any trouble with them and can always find them on sale for good prices. It's the stock drive in the Mackie modular decks like HDR, SDR.

Nope!

SATA (Serial Advanced Technology Attachment) is a different protocol than EIDE (Enhanced Intergrated Drive Electronics).

You would need a SATA controller card just as if you would need a SCSI controller card to use a SCSI disc.. If your MB has one on it already, the answer to your question would be yes you can install a SATA drive.

I have the SCSI ultra160 drive, its super quiet and extremely fast. I can have 32 channels of audio playing simultaneously and it never bogs down.
