My IBM A30 P4 desktop has a 40GB HD with an Ultra ATA/100 Enhanced IDE controller. I'm also using a Western Digital Caviar 120GB outboard USB HD for backing up.

I'm looking for a nice fast 80GB HD to install internally in my computer. Any recommendations?

I've been looking at the Western Digital Caviar SE 80GB drives and I'm confused with some of the terminology. Can a SATA drive be installed in my machine with my ATA/100 EIDE controller?

Thanks guys.

and 80 gB?? haha..thats like a penny to me.

Seeing that it's "only a penny" to you, I won't bother you to give me your $.02 worth. This is just a hobby for me, and evidently I don't take this as seriously as you seem to take yourself. Have a nice day.

I'd recommend this site for drive comparisons.

I'd recommend the Western Digital Caviar WD2000BB/JB. A little larger than you are looking for but still can be had for about $100 CDN here in Canada. According to the benchmarks, it's the top ATA 100 performer.

Cheers!

EDIT: Forgot to answer your question. No, SATA cannot be installed on an IDE controller. On the other hand, I do believe that you can by SATA PCI cards.

Just bought four new Seagate Barracudas, 3 40's, 1 80gb. locally for around 70 dollars apiece(No price searching.). They run as cool as the case temp - just a few degrees above room temp and I cannot hear them operating(At least not over the noise of the fans and I run up to 3 at a time!). Speaking of temps, I run the drives in removable drawers that should be "hotter", but, as stated, no prob...

The drives they replaced were running at over 130F and one died completely, the other two were on there way out, after only a couple of years...

Will get a couple more as budget allows.

Just to say, I would have no problem buying Western Digital either - good stuff - I no longer use it, but the 20 gig WD I have from 1998(24/7 for 6 years!) still works fine... The one of the BIG 3 that I left out, I would avoid...

Yes, one must wonder what in the world people Do with 250+ gig HD's, ey? Videos I guess? How eckthiting!(Yeah, I know, some folk actually need such things, but, just a dig at the goofy poster, above...).

Thanks for the link, lots of good information there for us DAW users. A Canuck eh?

I appreciate the great input from all the gang. Very helpful to us folks trying to take the next step to some higher performance home studios.

Nope!

SATA (Serial Advanced Technology Attachment) is a different protocol than EIDE (Enhanced Intergrated Drive Electronics).

You would need a SATA controller card just as if you would need a SCSI controller card to use a SCSI disc.. If your MB has one on it already, the answer to your question would be yes you can install a SATA drive.
