It will work if 1) one of the devices functions in a "stand alone mode" and 2) both devices are selectable as far as clock master/slave.

Yes. You have to set up the FireStudio internal output routing so that the 8 mic (XLR) inputs are patched to ADAT 1 output. You cannot patch anything to ADAT2 output. Connect ADAT 1 output of the FireStudio to the ADAT 1 input on the Alesis IO|26. Set the clock source for the IO|26 to be ADAT 1. This should give you 16 mic (XLR) channels at 44.1 or 48KHz into the computer via the IO|26. Don't try to use the FireStudio firewire input at the same time.

Anyways, I am a super noob at this, so bare with me.
How do I hook them up together? Do I run both of them through a firewire and through an optical cable, or just one through the firewire with the optical cable connecting both of them.
Also, which one should be selected in Logic as the active audio device?

As per Boswell's suggestion, the Firestudio will run in standalone mode. Only the Alesis will be plugged in via firewire.

First configure the FireStudio to have its pre-amp outputs patched to its ADAT 1 output, then unplug the FireStudio FireWire cable. Leave the IO|26 FireWire cable connected to the computer.

Connect an optical cable between the ADAT 1 output of the FireStudio and the ADAT 1 input of the IO|26.

Configure Logic to use the IO|26 as the audio interface, and select ADAT 1 as the clock source. You should see 8 channels via the XLR inputs of the IO|26 and 8 more channels via the ADAT 1 input.
