just out of curiosity..will it hurt my equiptment if I leave it running all day - mainly just my powerMac, digi002 and my krk powered speakers? I spend most of my freetime in the studio but was curious if it would be hazardous to leave on while i am running errands during the day or out for a few hours at a time? thanks for your input

your question prompted me to do a quick google search. i always thought the constant heating/cooling caused the dreaded repeated expansion/shrinkage of parts. but they had a good response... who leaves their tv on all the time? tvs have many of the same components and you don't see it fail.
then the cost issue, upto $200-300 usd a year to let 'er run.
i suppose it makes absolutely no difference in the end, just go with whatever lets you sleep more soundly :)

If it was dangerous to leave equipment on, we wouldn't have any radio stations or infomercials to watch in the middle of the night.
Personally I don't work for the a electric company so when I'm done with stuff I always shut it off. Although even transistorized equipment needs to come up to operating temperature so switch it on a few minutes before you start doing anything with it. Turning things on and off does actually shorten it's lifespan but we are talking about the difference between 10 years versus 20 years, approximately of usable lifetime. Leaving anon obviously also contributes to our excessive consumption of our natural resources and contributing more to our pollution so use your best judgment and TURN THINGS OFF WHEN YOU ARE DONE! YOU DON'T WORK FOR THE POWER COMPANY, do you? I can hear my mother screaming at me now.

Turn it off.
You save on utility bills. Not just the power to run the gear, but you'll save on your air conditioning as well.
The "damage" inflicted by the daily on/off won't appear until long after your gear is obsolete.
Got tube gear? The tubes will last a little longer.
Every piece of gear creates a little noise. Turn it all off and enjoy the silence!
Some unauthorized moron won't be tempted to play with your toys when you're not there if they have to turn it all on.
Are you paranoid? No one can access a machine connected to the internet when it's off.
When turned off your gear can't crawl out of the racks and create trouble when you're not there.
You'll remember where to find the on switch after a power outage.

Everyone here at work leaves their computers on all the time and I never understood this because they are each having intermittent problems of having to reboot and then crasing, etc...
I turn my computer off every night for 2 reasons.
1. I dont want any problems with a constantly accessible inter/intra net connection.
2. I am a designer, so I have higher end graphics solutions and my computer case, motherboard, and video card all have cooling fans and one already went out once on my 600 dollar (used) video card and had to be replaced. a constantly running fan will not last forever and picks up dust more easily.

swprophet,
I think that it may be safe to just shut the equipment down whenever you leave. I mean it only takes a few seconds and you save the trouble of something going wrong while you're away. But hey it's your equipment and you can do what you like. Just thought I'd leave my 2 cents. :D
