Now this I can help you with, it all depends on how many channels you have and how many drums he has. Professionals mic every drum with usually 2 over head condensor mics. If you are on a budget, pick up one fairly good dynamic mic and stick it right over top(using a boom stand or hang it from the ceiling) of the drum set, basically over the drummers head. Mess with the highs and mids, I turn them about 80 percent up and it pics up well. Im tired as hell, so if that wasnt clear enough tell me and i'll try to be clearer. if you can go stereo in to your computer and dont want to spend to much..i would buy a little mixer with 4-6 mic pres, mic as much as the kit as you can, set levels, and just bus a stereo drum track to audacity.
