Hey, I am a part of a small band, and we are trying to record some of songs using very basic equipment, i.e. one directional mic, and one PZM. We are recording the songs all at once, with the mic at a fair distance from drums/amps, and it sounds alright for what we are looking for, but when the bass drum goes it makes the sound go wierd, cutting out the guitars, we think this is due to the pressure change in the room due to the drum, but not sure, is there any way we can get around this bearing in mind we only want a basic recording, with very basic equipment. Thanks for any help.

I don't know a lot about PZM microphones, but your symptoms sound like you are hitting the ceiling of your recording device. My guess is that your device has a built-in limiter that brings your instrument volumes down when the kick hits it. Hard to know without more info. Leave yourself some more headroom on your recording device, and bring the volume up later after you record.

Have you thought about simply muffling the bass drum to a ridiculous level? Fill it up with sheets and pillows just for the recording. Our band had a recording that sounded terrible because the bass drum kept "ringing". It would ring out over the whole track. We simply duct taped a tampon to the head and it sounded like a dream.
