hi guys, please is anyone of you using the newer standalone firewire / usb 2.0 combo connex drives plextor 716 UF (tray loading) or the 716 UFL (slot loading) drives with Toast 7 / Jam 6 under OSX panther 10.3.9... i am confused, because i wanted to buy one and the guy (a friend of mine who is an IT for HP) told me that those models are not working under OSX... do i have to buy the "normal" 716 and use something like an ICY BOX enclosure instead? firewire and USB 2.0 combo.
thanks for any help, i need to buy the drive ASAP.
cheers
axel

We use Plextor 716 UF (external firewire/usb) with OSX 10.3.9 and Toast 6 all the time... for archiving. Surely if it works with Toast, Jam should be fine... I'd go for it.
I think the distinction is that some apps like DVD Studio Pro want to see an internal "superdrive" to burn.
Cheers

thanks again, and i got a reply from plextor in the meantime... very good support, i have to say!
here is what they wrote to me:
Dear sir,
The official answer regarding compatibility with macintosh systems is : "Not Compatible".
The reason for this is: we do not include any mac os software or officially supply mac os support.
However, the unit will be recognised using mac os X and when using recording software like toast titanium, charismac discribe or NTI Dragonburn, the unit can be used on mac os X based systems.
Due to the mac os operating system all OS X versions from 10.0 till version 10.2.8 can only handle DVD-R, DVD-RW and DVD+RW discs. DVD+R discs are not correctly recognised by these operating system versions. You will be able to burn a DVD+R disc on these systems but after recording they are not readable by the system.
If the customer uses MAC OS 10.3.X all DVD formats are supported (DVD-R/RW DVD+R/RW) and these will be recognised by the operating system for playback. in all cases recording software is required suggested programs are : toast titanium, charismac discribe or NTI Dragonburn.
There is also a program available on the internet called Patchburn. When using mac os 10.3.x it is possible with this program to add full os support for non apple drives like the plextor there are also versions available for 10.2 and 10.1 however supported drivers are not updated so the use of mac os 10.3 is recommended. When this program is used you are able to use the plextor drive without any recording software installed. (using the implemented recording functions of the apple operating system. (finder burning, itunes burning, imovie burning, iphoto burning, etc...)
Take note this is a tool that is not an official apple product and thus not supported by apple themselfs.
Should it cause problems on the operating system apple or Plextor Europe N.V. is not responsable, it is a freeware tool to use at your own risk.
To my personal knowledge (i have been using it for some months now) it works perfectly fine.
If you are using the latest apple os 10.4.X it is possible that some drives from plextor are finder burning compatible. However we do not give any support on this issue nor does apple for that matter. We still advice you to use recording software but it may not be required.
Here is a short list of recent plextor drives that are supported for finderburning.
Model Burn support support level connection type
PX-740A yes unsupported profile ATA
PX-750A yes unsupported profile ATA
PX-716A yes unsupported profile ATA
PX-716AL yes unsupported profile ATA
PX-608U yes unsupported profile USB
PX-716UF yes unsupported profile USB/FireWire
PX-716UFL yes unsupported profile USB/FireWire
PX-740UF yes unsupported profile USB/FireWire
PX-750UF yes unsupported profile USB/FireWire
For os 9 support the situation is completely different. OS 9 only supports DVD-R/RW and you need recording software like toast titanium 5.3, however support for the newer drives becomes more and more difficult since this recording software is not updated anymore.
I hope this answers your questions completely, should you have any other questions regarding compatibility on mac os based systems feel free to contact me.
Kind regards,
i just thought i post this for everyone who might want to purchase a plex for mac.
