I've never tried this one, so I can't recommend it BUT if I were in your position, I'd be very tempted to try the Soundelux E-250. Looks like a fascinating microphone. Again, I have never had the opportunity to try one, so I'm just suggesting you take a look.
Some of the Brauners are awe-inspiring, although they don't seem to suit everyone. Haven't heard the Phantom series.

I wouldn't buy a U87 unless you're really sure it's the mic for you. Many people dislike this mic, and you could be one of them.
I still like playing with mine though :wink:

Of course, it all depends of what you are after...if this is a "desert island" type of question, I would have to say:
- API 512 (or the OSA clone) for pre
- EV RE 15/16 for mic
If you can't get great results with this pair, regardless of what you are recording instrument/genre wise, you will never be able to get it....
