It retains its clean but adds a darkness to things that other mics do not. I like it particularly well on guitar amps when I'm looking for that heavier blues sound, and I like it out in front of a drum kit as a color room mic. For the money its really good.
What pres do you use with it?

Wow!!!!!ART MPA?
Ive been thinking about adding that pre to my collection,I currenetly use the ART OPL,the damm things sounds great,I find myself going to that pre when micing acoustic guitar.
One question Dave: Give me youre honest opinion on ART Gear, what makes it so good, and what makes it so bad.
The MPA is the only ART piece I would spend any time on at all.
The MPA is the only ART piece I would spend any time on at all. The same goes for most of the budget preamps. I own a 32 channel Ghost and have all the cheap preamps I need. Plus they all have attenuation,EQ,and routing to other parts of the studio rack.
The MPA has its own sound and doesnt smear things as much as a lot of devices in its price range. I have experimented with different tubes and have found there is a difference in tonality and response with different manufacturers.
Its a good box...and for the money it might be great.
