A couple of Danish producers/engineers, among them Mr. Allan Bregnedahl and Torsten Matthiessen, got together this summer and tested as many microphones as they could get their hands on. A very interesting test, and I thought I would link to it here. It's in Danish, so I will just translate the introduction:
"The Great Microphone Test Vol. 2
This time it's about vocal microphones. The vocals have been recorded through a Soundscape mixer. The files are unprocessed, except they have been normalized. They have been recorded with three different vocalists, one female, two male.
The vocals have been recorded at a distance of about 30 cm from the vocalist, which means the microphones that are usually being used live do not get the advantage of the proximity effect.
The files are in MP3 format and can freely be downloaded. We've chosen to convert the files to a slightly worse quality as we will rather sell the CD-ROM, not because we want to earn anything but just to cover some of the many expenses included with doing a test like this one. If you're interested in buying a CD it can be ordered from here. Costs 40 DKK (about 6.50 bucks). If you're interested in both CDs (from a previous microphone test...), these can be bought for 70 DKK (about 11.50 dollars)."
...And they list all the different microphones as they have been tested with the three vocalists.
I thought you might find it interesting and useful!

Right now the only thing weaker in my recoridng chain than my mics is my level of skill. But hopefully time, critique and experience will improve my skill. But I don't think they are going to help my microphones.
thanks for the post
