I've just been given a Shure SM91 Unidirectional microphone complete with an in-line ILP-1 preamp :)
What's this type of mic used for in location recording? My first though was piano (cos it's a flat mic I suppose). Any hints, tips would be much appreciated.

Great as a second kick mic. Use it in conjunction with a d112 beta 52 or Beyer M88 (pretty common live setup for big tours) and mix to taste.
I remember years ago reading about the drummer from RUSH taping one to his chest while he tracked to get yet another perspective.
Also works great just sitting on the floor in front of a kit.I put velcro on the base of mine and have put it on walls as well. Have fun!

Informed from another source that this mic works well on kick drum and possibly piano - so it's definately going out on the next band gig.
