Also, many pros still go back to the analog domain. A fat console and a really good 2 track recorder with outboard compression and equilizers can work wonders, with experience.

Even a good professional quuality Hi fi VCR in the VHS format can serve as a nice 2 track recorder using premium tapes. Get one that has manual input gain and meters. The lesser Hi Fi VCR's must accept a signal less than 1.0V to keep the agc circuits from interacting with the signal. Remember the 0.775V=0dB rule to avoid gain management problems in the analog domain.

It all depends on the experience VS the knowledge base as which way you can master to top flight quality.

I would also ask what kind of budget you have to work with and if you are planning to master for yourself and friends or if it is an area you wish to specialize and excel in. Like any craft, there are certain minimum entry level requirements in order to be proficient.

You would not begin a career as a carpenter without a tool belt, a reliable hammer and at least a cursory understanding of power tools. Without those things you could call yourself a carpenter, but it would not make you one.

We would all be happy to make suggestions on getting the most bang for your buck while collecting useful tools if we had an idea of your desired outcome.

Thanks for the reply guys, I had a feeling that I was going to get a few ruffled shirts with that question. I should have been a bit more descriptive about myself. I have been a recording / mix engineer for the last 18 years with about 8 million in record sales under my belt. Needless to say my situation would not be for friends or neighbors kids. This purpose of the digital studio is: I have a new room opening up and next door to me is a full on analog mastering facility. They have discussed with me the need for a digital mastering setup for clients who can’t afford the 250-350 and hour rate. I have a full-on Pro Tools rig with all of the trimmings, digital and analog. Sonic Solutions would be completely over the top for this situation. With that said, I was hoping someone has some experience using Spark or WaveBurner?

I'd use pro tools for editing and then assemble in waveburner or jam. There really isn't a dedicated mastering program for the mac-unbeliveable. On a PC it wold be either wavelab or samplitude.

I use Sound Forge 6.0, does that compress my waves the same as any other compressor, or is there a difference?
