Hello, first post here.
I recently purchased the saffire pro 26 (love it) and am using it on my PC recording with Sonar 6. However, I am looking to make my setup mobile by purchasing a MacBook. I currently have a 4 space rack with a power conditioner-Saffire-and a 2U drawer. I have never in my 27 years used a Mac and know absolutely nothing about them especially mac software.

hate it and am not going to even register my copy, this is my inspiration for finally trying a Mac
What i would like to know is what are the most popular/user-friendly/ affordable options for software that will meet my needs.
My need is to have a mobile 8 track recording system for recording live shows and the occasional "in-house" recording"
My initial plan is to track with the mac and then transfer file to my PC (XP Only) for mixing.
What are my options for meeting my tracking needs. I am new to this so if there is any info that would be helpful let me know.

So, I tried out GB for the first time last night and was a little dissapointed that I cannot save to WAV files, but i did manage to find a aif converter since i am doing my mixing on my pc. My next question is, how do you specify where the GB session files write to. I have an external firewire HD ont he way and was trying to figure it out last night but could not.
My next step is most likely to buy Sonar 6 for my mac since I have experience using it. Will Sonar work the same as it does on my PC ie save to wave files?

Sonar is PC only, you could use bootcamp to boot to XP, but there are issues with the Mac hardware and some audio interface drivers.
Besides the apps I mentioned earlier, there's also Tracktion, and PTLE.
There is also a beta of Reaper, that I'm currently looking at.

Yes, I used Express for several years, just upgrade to Logic Pro a couple of weeks ago.
It's more complete app, with more pro features than GB. you can edit MIDI and audio with more detail. It also includes a few more virtual instruments and effects.
Go out to Apple site and check out the video tours for Logic Pro and Express, the vids will give you a better idea of the capabilities.

Express does seem to fit my needs more. I do live tracking, I just have no need for virtual tracks or drum loops or midi for that matter, which apple adds in as bonus features. I do like the fact that you can write the mix to wav files, that would eliminate having to have another pogram to convert from aif to wav.

Your Mac will come loaded with Garage Band, an entry level DAW with integrated effects and instruments, it also supports the Audio Unit plugin standard.
It can also record up to eight tracks at a time.
Logic Express is the next step up from GB, it can load GB sessions, and contains all the effects and instruments found in GB.
Digital Performer from MOTU works well also, comes with a good basic set of plugs.
They offer a crossgrade from any DAW for $395
Abelton's Live is a different animal but can function for your needs.
Steinberg has issues on Macs, and I cannot suggest it, that's coming from a longtime Cubase user.
