How does it affect the highs though?

Depends...when I've use the system, I've used it at 15ips, the highs were clear as a bell, the bottom deeper than Lake Superior.

Michael Beinhorn was using them at 7.5ips and while the top was nice, the bottom was like nothing I had ever experienced before, and probably like nothing that could ever come out of a car speaker. The deck(s) also required an azimuth alignment about every 3 hours.

I've never heard it at 30, but from what I understand it sounds like a 1/2" 30ips Studer 2 track...only 'times 4'.

Thanks Fletcher, it sounds too good to be true. Do you know of any big albums that at least part of it was done on a 8 track 2" machine?

There's a studio out by me that has a 2" 8 A800 and he runs it at 30ips. I've never heard anything really amazing coming off that machine but I've never heard anything amazing come out of that studio either. Part of the problem may be that he's got it tied to a Big.

or maybe its just the user ;)

Great tools in the hands of a poor engineer wont yield crap but average tools in the hands of a great engineer can do wonders.

Social Distortion 'White Light, White Heat, White Trash' was made on two of them, Ozzy Osbourne's 'Ozzmosis' album used one of them, there have been a few others as well that didn't sell as well [or in the case of a band named Pinebox...is sitting in a vault somewhere at Mercury Records unreleased]

There are several other studio's and artists with them, Van Halen, Neil Young to name two. I'm not sure if they're using them for production [Van Halen got theirs subsequent to the release of 'Van Halen III'], or remixing their back catalog "5.1" to them.

David Kahn from Reprise got a set to use in front of Pro-Tools, but I'm not sure if he's still doing that (or quite what he's been up to since they made him exhaulted grand poo-bah over there).
