It seems that when I hit the stop button in Cubase, the track stops, but the reverb actually continues on momentarily, as if the stop function has no effect. What exactly is going on here, and is this an effective way to preview reverb by itself (since otherwise it is masked to a great degree by the music)?

Well a better way to preview reverb by itself is to solo the FX channel. Whats going on is the plug continues to process the tails but as you are now hearing tails possibly induced from a stop point that created artificial transients, its not a valid listening tool, quite aside from the common sense of the matter.

Hmm, I use the cheapy for most versions, SL or Studio. Should be possible on most of them, maybe LE disables it?
LE does allow solo of FX tracks. I use it all the time.

This is my standard procedure in Sony Vegas, but I have yet to make soloing of buses work in a normal, useful way in Pro Tools 7 LE. As far as I can tell you can't solo buses in PT without it muting the tracks sending to the bus (silencing the bus). If you set the tracks to Solo Safe they remain audible, so you still can't solo the bus. It does work with pre-fade sends, but that's not how anyone I know does reverb sends. This is probably my most frequent gripe about PT, and if they didn't fix this in PT9 they are idiots.
