My version of Cubase SX is on its way, and in anticipation, I have a couple of questions regarding VST System Link (I have read the VST System Link DOC from the Steiny web page). Anybody got any more info on this than I do?

1)When will the Cubase 5.1 version for System Link be released? Nothing on the Steinberg Web Site...not even an expected date.

2) I am using an Echo Layla/24 card that has several different types of digital ins/outs. I am currently sending a digital ADAT (8-channel)signal into the Layla card from my PreSonus mic preamp. In order to use VST System Link, will I have to disconnect the mic preamp link to the Layla, and use the ADAT link to connect the 2 computers? Or is it possible to continue to use the ADAT ins on the Layla for signal input, then sync the 2 computers via S/PDIF? (I guess the question is more basically written as "Is the Digital Link between the 2 computers the *same* pathway as the Signal or microphone input pathway, or can they be different?")

3) I am currently slaving the Layla from the clock in the PreSonus via ADAT, and plan on syncing the new audio card to the PreSonus also using the Word Clock link...I am assuming this will work? Any comments?

Here's to the next month or two trying to figure out Cubase SX and VST System Link! Cheers!

I am not talking about syncing the clock, but actually linking the computers via the S/PDIF ports on the Layla, and still using the ADAT lightpipe for audio-in to the system. In the System Link Docs, they do state that you can sync the clocks via the digital link, or via a separate link, like a Word Clock. I prefer this method so that I can sync my Cubase SX system with the Layla *and* my Cubase VST system (card type still unknown) all to the PreSonus DigiMax.

Echo doesn't think I can use the ADAT audio-ins on the Layla, and then still use the S/PDIF ports for the System Link...they say that only one digital set will work at one time (either the ADAT *or* the S/PDIF...not both...). I remembered reading that in the Echo Docs...

So I guess I am still in a quandry as to how to set up the 2 computers...I hate to lose the ADAT ins on the Layla, yet I need to find a way to link the 2 computers via a digital link. If I really had to, I could take the analog-outs on the Digimax rather than the ADAT out, and then go analog-in to the Layla, and then link the 2 computers using either the ADAT or S/PDIF. Like I said though, I just prefer the A/D converters in the DigiMax, and like the way the setup sounds.

I wonder if I can get *another* small card that just has a set of S/PDIF ins/outs, and see if it can co-exist with the Layla card. I can then link the 2 computers with the S/PDIF ports, and sync them with the Word Clock from the DigiMax...does this sound do-able to anyone???

DH, I don't see why that wouldn't work. Main thing is finding a card that has workable drivers for your OS (if a Layla is working in the system, your chipset obviously isn't a problem) Then, best if you have an open PCI slot that doesn't share an IRQ with anything you need in that configuration, so the un-necessary stuff can be disabled if necessary. Beyond that, you're back at the mercy of Steinberg, can't help you there. Does SX still have the "True Tape" feature? Buddy of mine almost never turns it off, but since he's 3 states away I've yet to hear an A/B on it... Steve

My motherboard has a SPDIF option on it..get yourself a motherbaord with a SPDIF option on it and you can use that for the VST system link!!
This way the Layla is completely free!!!
How's that for a solution! Eh?!!

Well...I guess, if I really have to!!! Sounds like a *great* solution. Is this one of the new ANUS computer mobos?

(Does anybody even remember what "ANUS" stands for anymore...I know *I've* forgotten!).

I could get the mobo with the S/PDIF for the new SX system with the Layla card installed, then add a small PCI card for the old computer with S/PDIF hookups...works for me! Any recommendations on a good small card with just S/PDIFs???

That would be cool to have a card with just SPDIF on them but that would take an IRQ!!!! Can't be doing that now can we! lol
ANUS=Asus Northwood Users Society...named by Audiohead...who should be around still I presume? Audiohead? I know you are around? Correct?
Yes the Anus machine does have the SPDIF on it..Asus P4B266
looking for a just SPDIF card...can't find one!! that would be cool for a VST System link card!!
