Just bought Behringer 1953 "tube" pre without listening even,
got it cheap and not expecting much! I'll change the tubes and that doesn't improve it much, I know. Just needed something right
now while waiting for some money for my API clones later on...
I'll get this B thing tomorrow so I hope for the best.
Any advice though?

Tesla/JJ ECC83S tubes sounds nice in it for a wide open smooth response. They can really help hush that thing a bit.
What I find are great tubes in the T1953 are GE 12AU7's, Sylvania's and (yugo) Ei 12AT7's.
Tube dampers help a bit as well.
When you get it, crack the case and have a look. You'll be surprised at how many quality components are actually in there.
Pull the little light bulbs out from behind the tubes too. They drain a small load of power that's unecessary.
You may find full saturation settings to be a little harsh (that's the Warmth control) so back off to about 3 o'clock or so for optimal tube gain. Low Gain settings with higher Line output will keep it quieter.
Take advantage of the High Pass filter and it's variable settings. I like that feature on the 1953.
