Howdy,
I had a producer question. I am producing some artists that have a possibility in doing something. I am negotiating my producing fees. The artists are independent but may get a distribution deal or even a record deal.
Soooo. Some one posted earlier that producers get 3% which is pretty standard, and I've heard that figure before. However, 3% of what? Distribution cost, Wholesale, or retail? Would it be retail? Any body that knows ?
Thanks abunch
Darren

Bob,
Thank you very much for the reply!
What would be the difference between collecting from an Artist and collecting from a label that I should be aware of?
Is there a place on the web where I can find some producer agreements to gleen some info from?
This group I am producing is independant but we are going to shop for a deal (bluegrass), and I think there is a possibility that they could land one. All I'm charging them is points (3).
Their last project was independant and not distributed, and was not produced. I think this project could do something.
Any more thoughts very welcome
Darren

3% of nothing is?
How many records do bluegrass artists sell on average...I'n taknig new ones too.
3% is also too much for anybody that has to ask. 1% is probably more realistic, unless ypour also hooking them up (i.e. shopping the deal).
Next time get paid upfront.
Three percent of retail but there are important issues including:
1. who actually pays, the label or will you need to collect from the artist
2. what are your fees and are they considered just an advance against your royalties?
3. what needs to be recouped from your royalties? many producers get paid for every copy sold from the beginning. If you have to help pay for the videos, tour support, management fees and legal bills, you may never see a dime. What's worthwhile for an artist is rarely of comparable value to a producer.
