What up all?

I want to know what is the volume a radio track has to be, or any industry track. Bcuz every album ive bought seems to be equal volumes, some of my mixes were a little low.

Also Can I have some tips as to know if my mixes are heading in the right direction (Master In the yellow etc.)

I record at 48 then convert to 44.1 when bounced.

Any Waves plugin tips?

Any mic placement tips for rappers/Singers? I noticed that the AKG has more mid freq's than the Shure.

I use Pro Tools 6.4
Shure Ksm57 mic
Akg C200b
TPS 2 Preamp
Samson Resolve Monitors
Pc

Thanx a lot

There isn't really a volume per se that radio tracks have to be. I usually compare to several tracks of the same genre and a/b back and forth when i'm doing my own mastering. you can also try something like t-racks to get up to volume. i personally hate the sound of t-racks, and think it is hard to get it to sound right.

as far as mic placement, i will usually point the mic to the side just a bit so to roll off some of the pops, and try it with a low cut and without to see what works with your voice. also, get a better vocal mic. sm57s can work for rock music, but as far as a budget vocal mic for rap, i would go try out a few different mics to see what works for your voice.

If you can afford to have it mastered then keep the volume low so the mastering house has a bit of headroom. They will pump the volume up for you and in most cases do a much better job of it. The most popular waves plug for this is the L2 or the newly released L3 for the home studio do-it-yourselfer. UAD has recently released their precision limiter which might be the best for the job if you're a plug-in person.
