I'm very new to this whole home studio thing, and I do not have the funds for a full scale studio. I recently had to sell my bass amp, so my bassist has nothing to play through. I think I have a plan to get around this, but I have a few questions:
1. Can I just buy an EQ (or preamp? I really don't know which one I should get first), mic up my drumset, and plug the bass and mics into the EQ/preamp? I was thinking then I could just plugin a few headsets and have an EQ'd version of what we're playing.
2. If the above will work, what do i buy to record bass and drums simultaneously? An EQ, preamp, or what? I would be using a bass mic and an at2020 for the drums. I would like to get a workable sound out of this setup.
3. If the above doesn't work, what are some cost effective ways of recording bass and drums together?

You are new to the vocabulary. It sounds to me as if you are looking to record the bass "direct." This is probably the most common way of recording a bass - more common than micing an amp.
Assuming that you have close to zero equipment, I'd suggest looking at a recording interface that allowed for one direct input and had at least two - preferably four - addition microphone preamps. That would get you started. (But do more research in getting an interface - it will determine a lot of constraints for the near future.)

A microphone must first go to a preamp of some kind whether it is a stand alone unit or a preamp section of an audio interface. From there it the signal can go to any sort of eq or compressor etc prior to it's journey to being recorded or mixed.
It sounds like from your description you need a mixer. Or if you goal is to record and listen back, then you don't need a mixer but a recording interface.
