Hi all! I was wondering if anyone's used the AT2020 to mic a snare...specifically, side-Micing the shell. The mic has pretty high SPL rating, but is there a chance of damaging it this way? Its only $90 or so, but its still a good mic, so I'd hate to ruin one! Thanks for any advice! Andy

I did give it a test run yesterday...seems to be fine. No clipping. I've got the kick mic and a pair of overheads, plus the 2020 on the snare shell. I get a good overall snare fullness from the OH's, and if I dial in a bit of the shell mic, I get a nice crack, with some shell resonance which is nice. I'll post a clip if I get time later on if anyone's interested. Andy

I've been doing overdubs all night, and my brain is fried, but I'll try to post a few short clips of the drums asap. I ran MXL 603's as overheads (what can I say, all I've got, and really not so bad for the money...like almost none!). I tried MXL 2001's and the MSH-1's, but the 603's won this time. There was a Sennheiser MD421 on the kick, and the AT2020 side-shell mic'ing the snare. The weird thing was that the overheads were getting some occasional clipping at first, but not a bit of clipping on the AT2020. Seems like I remember them being rated at over 140 dB SPL handling or something. It adds a nice variable crack to the snare which can be dialed up or down depending on the song. Try to post something tomorrow! Andy

Okay, here's one of the songs we did this past weekend with the above mentioned mic'ing of the drums. Yep, AT2020 on the snare. Song is called "We Breath".... Sidekick

There's still some work to be done on this one, and the vocals were only a scratch take, but I'm kinda lovin' the thickness of this song. We plan on adding a string quartet to this one...we'll see how that goes! Andy
