...running a western digital wd1000 caviar (ATA100 w/ 8meg cache) on an ATA 66 bus (mac g4 800).

1. possible?*
2. loose cache enhancement?
3. Other concerns for use in DAW as audio only drive?

*got a gift and want to know if I can use it at work.

Thanks in advance

Yeah, even though the HDD is 7200rpm and has an 8Mb cache, you won't see much noticeable improvement on an ATA66 bus. You're stuck with the bottleneck. But as M Brane stated, with another HDD and an ATA RAID card, you'll be rockin!
Also, bulk that G4 up with as much CAS2 PC133 as you can. It's a cheap way to keep your Mac crankin.

Thats too bad:(

Thanks M Brane & SOS for the assistance.

With respect to the ATA raid card: I have RME hdsp card and will be getting either of Powercore or UAD1. Will a the Ata Raid tax the PCI bus to the extent that I may have problems with bottleneck there?

With respect to maxing out on CAS2 PC133, any recommendations on brand?

I really am getting warmed up. This forum is full o' vibes.

Guidance,

It's possible to have issues if you have more than 1 bus mastering card in there. Sometimes you can swap cards around to get them to play nice, sometimes not. The Sonnet & SIIG cards have an AV utility that slows the transfer rates for older Macs with 32mhz PCI, although that kinda defeats the purpose of a RAID. You might want to dig around some of the Mac audio sites to see if anyone has a similar combo.

Hard to go wrong with Crucial RAM. A bit pricey, but good stuff and a good return policy just in case.

Thanks M Brain for the suggestions.

I must confess that I am not only new to RO, but also a complete "newbie" to the very concept of online forums...

Can someone recommend a few good Mac Audio sites?
