So I spent the day going through my closet in the spare bedroom (tape vault, hehe). I came across a reel of fresh 2 inch tape, its made by a company called Zonal? has anyone heard of the manufacture? its type is 999 (assuming +9 tape) no idea what it sounds like...
even worst...I have no damn clue as to how it ended up in the closet. heh

Good lord I do love the sound of that tape. Zonal, unfortunately went out of business a couple of years ago, but I've heard a rumor that they will once again begin to produce tape with the same formulation.
I've used both their 2" as well as 1/2". It has a very clear, very silky character to it. Legend has it that it was the 'tape of the BBC', and was primarily sold and used in the UK. Before they closed, I had the opportunity to do a couple of albums on it, and frankly would have switched to it for the bulk of my work if they hadn't closed.
The other cool thing about 999 is holding the box upside down... :D

I shot sound for films on Zonal 818, and it does indeed have a silky sound. 818 is an old school stock, iirc, so 999 should be better and more modern sounding. I think it was supposed to have technical characteristics pretty close to 3M 908 (the 818, that is).
