A couple of questions I have on building a DAW

Is it really neccesary to have an 8mb cache drive for the system drive?

Can I get away with one drive for OS and 2 external firewire drives for audio? Will the PC freak mixing 24 tracks with plugs?

I have a budget of around $800 so I have to cut corners somewhere. I'd like to build a really quiet system if possible. Here is what I have so far:

AMD Athlon XP 3200+ Barton
ASUS A7N8X-E Deluxe MOBO or Gigabyte K8NS Ultra 939
512 MB Corsair XMS PC3200 RAM
80 GB Seagate Barracuda
LG CD-RW drive
Matrox G450 video card
Zalman ZM-2HC2 HD Heatpipes (2)
Nexus AXP3200 CPU Cooler

case: either Antec Sonata or Nexus Breeze.

Any input greatly appreciated.

You're right David. It is your system. I started a new thread because no one but you answered the first thread and I thought maybe a new title and some new questions would spark more interest. I need to order the parts for this system by Thursday so I am in kind of a rush. If you want you can delete my first post.

HI,

i cant imagine buying something that old.

at least get to the new 939. the processor is priced about the same
say an amd 64 3000.
an Asus A8v cant be more that the other asus board.
change the video card to a geforce (450 is problematic)
or go for a 550.

then you have the ability to get a dual core later.

ADK audio,

thanks for the reply.

Wow, I'm surprised to hear you say the 450 is problematic. I thought this was a universally recommended card for a DAW. What problems have you seen?

Would this CPU be a good pick. Newegg is having a one day sale for $153?

AMD Athlon 64 3200+ Venice 1GHz HT Socket 939 Processor Model ADA3200BPBOX - Retail

I see a refurbished ASUS A8V DELUXE Socket 939 VIA K8T800 board at newegg for $70. Would this be the right version to pick up?I have read that some people have had problems with this board. What about the Gigabit K8NS Ultra 939? This seems to be a highly recommended mobo for DAW's and doesn't use a VIA chipset.

In terms of RAM, do I need registered memory or is it ok to go with this:

CORSAIR XMS 512MB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) Unbuffered System Memory Model CMX512-3200C2PRO

Thanks again,
