I am trying to set up a home recording studio, and am caught in deciding which digital interface i need. We're using a IMac g4 to record onto and will be recording electric and bass guitare, vocals and drums. we have a mixer and one mic so far. I'm just not sure how many analog inputs we need to record everything. thanks for your help!

if you are going to fork out the cash for an four channel interface, splurge, and buy an eight channel, wont cost you too much more, and will allow you to actually record drums the way they ought to be. Why do you want to cheat yourself, of making a good recording, the 8 channel gives you so many more options, and you can walk into one these, for about the price of a tank of gas. (about 400 for a Delta 1010, and please dont buy the LE)

both can be expanded with an extra 8i/o via adat...
someone will probably talk about the midi in protools being bad.... but that's not entirely true.... and anyway it will be upgraded to protools 7 soon.... 0710 actually!!!.... (with expanded midi capabilities)....
protools i also fully compatible with the great majority of pro studios....
stay away from cubase on mac.... it takes about 20% more cpu for the same plugs... compared to protools...

assuming your recording the instruments at seperate times, i think you'd need at least 4 inputs and pre's, ..(2 OH's, snare, kick) ..then the guitars and bass you could get away with one,two, or three, ..whatever sounds right to you....
