Duplicate Recording Tracks

The last guy that recorded us, had us record everything twice, excluding the drums and vocals... but he says that it helps with a "fuller" sound... and I'll admit, it did come out nice sounding, but I had never seen anyone do that before... is this common, and a good idea to do?

It's not uncommon to record multiple takes, guitars for instance, lightly compress each one with slight setting changes, and pan them out across the spectrum from left to right.
Big, strong sound!
