OK, I've been reading up around these forums and have found some useful information but not quite specific enough. We want to start recording, but, we are not sure where to start. Ive been looking through my Musicians Friend catalogs but still confused. I have looked at PCI cards and it seems like they would work but id like to be sure. We are positive we want to do it through the computer. Are setup is guitarist, bassist, drummer, vocalist, and i, as the guitarist, do backup vocals.
I would say I do not want to spend a lot of money but i want quality if I'm going to buy something instead of getting a piece of crap and having to replace it. This doesnt mean i want to spend a fortune. If you could come up with a setup for a reasonable price i would greatly appreciate it. if you need any more information please ask me.

If you could provide us with more info such as budget, how many tracks you want to be able to record at once, computer specs, etc, we'll do our best to point you in the right direction. Also, be wary of musician's friend reviews and product descriptions. They are misleading at best and flat-out inaccurate at worst. :cry:

And thats the thing I do not know how much i should spend. Alright quality. And by how many tracks i want to record you mean continuess? (SP*) I do not know. What would you reccommend. As you can see I am very new to recording :P. I'd also like the software to have lots of options for editing. I tried to give out as much info as i could. if anything else is needed please ask.

a) how many simultaneous inputs will you need?
will you be placing 6 mics on a drumkit wanting to record them all at once? will a whole band be tracking live all at once? or will this just be a one input at a time, overlay-tracks-one-over-the-other setup? any option is a valid one, but leads to unique solutions.
b) MIDI... will you want the ability to sequence and edit MIDI files? This will effect both options for hardware and software
c) What genre of music are you recording? often certain gear lends itself more to a particular sound or feel... choose accordingly
d) All plugs are not created equal!! many people think if a plug fits into a jack, it does the job. 1/4" jacks could be line level or instrument level, miniplugs could be stereo-mini or mini-mic...when chosing a soundcard, look for proper input types. If you're going to be recording microphones, try to budget for decent pramps, be they on a mixer, or on the soundcard itself.
I think that's about it...I'm sure others will have a bit to add...
