I am wondering if it will work to hook an electric guitar into a stereo/receiver's RCA input jacks. I have an adapter that changes a 1/4" jack to the two red and white RCA plugs, but will it even work?
The reason I am wondering is from what I know, a stereo's LINE IN uses an input source that is line level, or powered. A guitar is not internally powered, so the stereo isn't receiving any signal from it. Therefore, I can't see how my stereo receiver will amplify the guitar.
But you guys are the experts. .

I tried that very thing back in the early 80's and blew out one

If you don't mind risking your receiver at least you might want to split the mono guitar signal at the cable end with a "Y" cord, and go into both left and right sides of the receiver's STEREO input, instead of just one side. That way the stereo preamp is not forced to try and deal with the hot guitar signal in an unbalanced manner.
But be warned...runnig an electric guitar through a stereo receiver is not wise.
