i have an acer laptop. its hooked up by a chord connecting from the wall to the computer lol. the m-audio interface is hooked up to the computer through a usb chord. the mic is plugged in the front. idk how else to explain it.

This sounds like a routing issue within ProTools. Make sure you have the input assigned correctly. The 55SH does not require phantom power so that isn't an issue. Your audio chain goes something like this:
Sound into Shure 55SH
55SH into M-Audio box (which one?!?!?)
M-Audio box via usb into computer/ProTools M-Power or PT9 multi track session.

You did not answer Bob's questions which is less than unhelpful. What version of Protools do you have? What version of M-Audio interface do you have? What is the firewire on your Acer-onboard or add on card? Did Protools actually start up? What is the operating system-Win7, Vista, XP? Do you have any screenshots of your PT session and of the M-Audio gui?

One way to figure out routing issues is to place the microphone near a radio at moderate volume. Turn up the mic input on the M-Audio interface until the green light starts to flash. Go into the M-Audio control panel and make sure it is receiving audio (hint, it won't even start unless there is a connection to the interface). Now go into your PT session and make sure you have it set up correctly to receive the audio stream from the M-Audio box. Make sure you have armed the individual track to record. You should now have some sort of meter display in PT. Hit record and see if you get a recorded track.

Is this Pro Tools SE, the $119 Avid Recording Studio package that includes an M-Audio FastTrack interface box? If so, it's a cut-down version of even the entry-level Pro Tools systems, but it does have detailed help screens that take you through the setup and first recording session. Have you gone through those?

I'm gathering reading your manual is not something you have bothered to do. The audio settings aren't within the computer control panel at all.

Read the manual. Read and follow the quick start guide. Watch this video.

lol why so snooty? your advice isnt very helpful :) id rather speak with somebody that doesnt blow for a living.

Not snooty. This is a pretty straight forward and simple setup. If you watched the video it gives you a play by play walk through of what you are asking. That is about as much hand holding as anyone can do. How is that not helpful?

If you have done these things already including reading the manual, then perhaps you can provide some of the information that has been asked instead of giving glib responses.

You'll find that pretty much all the regular contributors and mods are professionals and don't have much time for teenage angst or attitude.

I'm sorry if a paragraph is too much for a 20 year old attention span. Your initial question and response indicated you didn't understand. Far be it from someone trying to be helpful to illicit actual information. And yes you figured it out because that is about the simplest of interfaces available. Dare I say self explanatory especially if you read the manual. Your "witticism" is lacking little boy. Go play at Gearslutz.
