Hey Ddragon; I would go to a local music store and get an education directly with some good hands on with the local equipment, I'm sure they'll be happy to help.
Do you have any Sam Ash close to you?
Anyway need to know a lot more about your gear before even give advice, you know . . .
How would I know if your console has return and monitoring outputs, if so that's what you do.
2 sets of speakers1 for the PA and 1 set for you own monitoring on stage etc.
Main output of the mix is going to the main amps, then direct output from the channel being monitored or the mix being monitored direct to your monitor in front of you.
lets say you play the Bass guitar, you need to hear yourself, but you need to hear what the drummer is doing and even maybe the guitar as well, so you decide the mix you wish to hear and output that into you monitor.
Does that help any? I hope I did not confuse you even more.

Best thing go to the music stor let them explain and show you how.

I agree with you totally that Its best that I go to a local music store and get an education directly with some good hands on with the local equipment. I did and that helped me a lot now.

I mainly want to set up gear at home, for home gigging, hooking up my guitar, synth and drum machine. Will think of getting a pair of active monitors.

I do not know Sam Ash, maybe you could tell me more about him? or whereabouts he lives in Malta?
