Hello one and all

So this is my first post on here, and I will therefore probably say something pretty stupid (I apologise already)
Firstly, merry christmas!

Secondly, myself and my Mum have bought my Dad some recording gear for him to do some bits of voice-over work. He wanted to record onto, and edit with, his current laptop. I've already made sure he gets himself Adobe Audition 1.5, because I've used it for years and still like it.
We've got him a Studio Projects C1 condenser mic, and initially thought buying an XLR to 3.5mm cable would make it work so simply. We were of course wrong, and I now realise that phantom power is needed.

I've spent the evening looking around, and as far as I can make out, as he'll be using his laptop, my best bet is to buy him a preamp with phantom power. Would this be right?
That way, my (hopeful) plan of how this will work is as such...
mic - XLR - preamp - XLR to 3.5mm - mic input on the laptop

Could you please advise me if this will work or not?
Here is the link for the preamp I was looking at...it is very basic and seemingly cheap, but money is now super tight, and from what I can make out, it does everything I'm looking for.

Any help you could offer me would really be much appreciated.

Thanks all.

That should work via the USB connection. The mic input on your computer is not a standard mic input. It is designed for web chatting and is wired differently.

And Audition 1.5 is not freeware and in fact is not currently available legally. Version 3.01 is current and Version 4 is due out in the next several months but while cheaper than ProTools would not be considered cheap.

If you need a cheap DAW program then go look at Reaper.
