It means, no matter what the salesman said about short unbalanced runs being ok, unbalanced runs suck, and are noisy....

but first try turing your LCD monitor off & unplugging it, or if you have a laptop then remove the powersupply from the wall.
If either of these get rid of the buzz, you have an earth issue involving the switchmode psu of your laptop or LCD. the only real way to deal with it I found was to use an isolating transformer on that psu. - short of cutting grounds in vga cables etc.
You don't get it off headphones, as they are not connected to ground.
