Yes, you should try it. I've done it, and it works pretty well if you get one of the Urei stereo coupling boxes and follow the alignment procedure. Although IMO, an 1178 works better for this, not cause it's stereo, but it's a bit cleaner than 1176's and although I love the 1176 sound, they might be a little too grungy for 2 mix work. Then again 1176's might be perfect. Brian Gardener at Bernie Grundman Mastering told me years ago, that back in the day, Jeff Lynne used to bring in 1176's to compress ELO tapes during mastering.
I have a pair of old 1176's that are the first compressors I ever bought. They came with the stereo adaptor and I have been using them for all kinds of stereo purposes, including the mix bus. I like them a lot, but getting them set up is a bit of a pain. Sometimes they are the perfect thing for the mix and are worth the trouble.
Although I haven't tried the stereo link yet with the new Universal Audio 1176LN reissues, it might be worth a listen. My experience has been that the reissues were cleaner-sounding than the vintage units that were around to compare with.
