Can't say I've had experience, but a rule of thumb around here seems to be that, most of the budget gear will get the job done - just:
Don't pick something unreliable from an unreputable supplier.
Do pick something that has the features you need within the price range.
Learn how to use it as best you can, and that'll make more difference than doubling your budget.

I can't judge the internal components of each, but would think they were of the same quality.

The M-Audio chose to use a plastic case while Edirol chose metal. I don't know if that's important for a device that will be used at home most of the time.

The main differences that I can see between the two are:

M-audio has independent line/instrum for each channel,
Edirol has line/instrum for both channels at the same time.

M-audio has 6 line outs, Edirol 4 line outs.
M-audio has 2 - ¼” inserts, Edirol doesn’t.

Edirol has sample rate selection on board, M-audio doesn’t.
Edirol has ASIO selection on board, M-audio doesn’t.

I honestly don't know if any of those differences are significant or not, or will affect my recordings.

Inserts are good for keyboards or outboard effects processors.
I had to choose between an M-audio and an Edirol.
I chose the Edirol.
It's nice. :)

So long as both have ASIO drivers available, it's a null point.

A short search for "ASIO, MME" in the forum should reveal plenty of reasons to go with the former.
