M-Audio Firewire 410 Spdif External Clock Problem

Gear:
Mac OSX 10.4.8
Logic ver. 7.2.3
M-Audio Firewire 410 ver. 1.8.1-3
V-drums

Here is the deal. To use the Spdif IN's on the 410 I have to setup external clock. Problem is my V-drums seem to become out of clock synch intermidantly during a performance using the Spdif conection. A huge POP will come out of the speakers along with a host of other problems. Basically an audio card meltdown in which I have to reboot the computer to reset. I could use the analog IN's but that is a drag because I want to free up the analog IN's for other instruments. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

What length of coax cable are you using on the 410's s/pdif input? I have had unexpected pops and dropouts when attempting to use cables greater than about 2 metres for s/pdif connections.

If the cable length is reasonable, and assuming you have selected s/pdif coax input and the sync source set to external on the 410, you should be OK. But because you are getting problems that need a reboot, you may have a problem with the FireWire driver. I suggest you get hold of another s/pdif source such as a CD player or minidisc deck and try that instead of the V-drum unit to see if it does the same.
