I am doing laptop recording now instead of using my bulky desktop.
I was looking into the Mbox (the 2 inputs are all I need as I mostly record solo) However, I am scared of the reviews that talk about annoying latency issues. I don't want to pay the $450 for great software and decent hardware only to be frustrated to no end. I want something to plugin and record, simple as that!
I am used to recording with Cool Edit Pro and a SoundBlaster Card. I got amazing results especially with all of the great sounding plugins and I use really good microphones.
So, i guess my quesion is this: Is there another simple set-up I should go with instead of Digidesign's Mbox for under 500 bucks?

Thanks

I think that is a pretty bold statement. 5ms of latency can be very annoying for a vocalist.

The M-Box is not going to be any worse than anything else out there as far as latency goes. You should be fine. The M-Box does have facilities built in for zero latency monitoring.

I say "Go For It"

I was talking about latency on the Mbox today w/someone and how to 'get around' it...he suggested this, and it sounded like it shoudl work:

on the input/playback knob, put it to halfway so that you can hear what you're playing and also the track you're recording to...but mute the track that you're recording, and that should take care of it i think.

5ms can mean the difference between "in the groove" and not....something that's very important for quality work.

Yes..the M-box has latency issues...and can be tamed a little...but it will still be there...

I've found it to be ok for vocal tracking with local projects...

If you get a take right but the timing's a tad off you can always move the region....simple enough. If you've got the extra cash the 002 would be a great option also...
