Maybe ask this question in the mastering forum.
A couple of rules, differrent amps make the same monitors sound different. More power = more headroom = desirable. A used amp would probably be a better value.

I would suggest saving money and buying active speakers instead. You can srill keep your current amp and speakers for comparing your mix, but active is the way to go for a cleaner and more accurate sound when recording.

Passive systems have problems and so do Active.
If it where a matter of fewer components in the signal pass then passive speakers would be it.
Active speaker design today is in almost all cases about forcing drive units to play correctly in a small cabinet.

So you can't make a statement that says "go only for active" ;)

Getting a passive speaker is not just a matter of speakers themselves. You have to get a matching amp so that the sound is not coloured and ameliorated. Active speakers come in with their own custom made amp. If you want a clean and un-ameliorated sound, active is the wisest way to go unless you have the money and the knowledge to get a matching amp for your passive speakers.

This appears to me to assume that all active speakers do have a well matched amp, speaker, crossover well optimized for each other, and that is a very big assumption that I'd be willing to bet is not always true. Anyone can cram all those components in a box and sell it as an acitve monitor. I would suggest that when buying an active monitor, buy the very best you can afford and buy from a company that has history of making good active monitors.

Active speakers are cheaper but in the long run you will get more out of a passive system than an active, and you will also save money on not having to change the speakers + amp when you upgrate :tu:
