can this be done? i know you can buy switch boxes but are there any problems or implications if i want my mac an pc to use the same monitor. i am finally getting a new mac as a dedicated audio machine but want to keep the trusty pc in the studio for internet/business type stuff.

Yes this can be done...if only using it for monitor there are no problems at all...Belkin makes them as well as other companies...they are called KVM switch boxes.
Now, if you want to share the keyboard and mouse as well than you will need to run a USB keyboard and mouse on the PC to do this with a Mac..which is not a problem with most PC's these days.
