Hi
anyone remember this stuff :) anyway, I know of someone who has a ton of
Ampex 765 (i think its 765-anyway its close) this is 1" data tape on 12"
reels and it all looks in pretty good shape. Anyway the question is can I
use this tape on my 1" machine for recording music. Will I experience
problems with it? will is cause excessive head wear?

Thank you
Brad

Brad,

I would stay away from it, heres the deal...the 700 series tape that Ampex made was "instrumentation" tape. This tape was designed I believe for digital data not analog audio. <--- hint #1 to stay away :)

secondly I looked into the tape physical characteristics and well...aside from the formula itself not even being close to our analog tape the physical thickness isnt the same. #2 :)

And finally if its something like 756 or 765 and says Ampex on it then I would definately sttay away from it seeing how all new tape comeing out is from Quantegy its probably been on the shelf for a bit actually probably quite awhile! the new formulas are numbered 700,721,722,795,797 and 799. Note: the one you mention isnt even listed which means its probably old tape.

For a piece of mind I would "buy fresh tape"
