The UAD-1 card made by Universal Audio and currently marketed by Mackie (http://www.mackie.com) is a board that goes into the computer and provides a number of plugins as well as a custom processor to handle them with minimal load on the host processor.

The quality of the plugins is outstanding. Its wonderful to be able to run heavy duty plugins without loading the host CPU.
