Hi all. I have a question regarding the QY300 sequencer. I just purchased one and can't find any information in the manual about hooking up various keyboards, so as to control them individually from the QY. There seems to be nothing in the manual regarding this. So how do I set it all up to record midi channels and play them back without having to listen to the QY's internal synth?  I've tried to find tutorials on it, but all they do is give me the lowdown on the internal synth.  Any help would be much appreciated.

Welcome,

I'm not familiar with the QY300 but you should be able to do this in the Utility Mode. Most seq have basic midi controls to bypass the internal sounds by turning off midi channels.

Have you dug around in MIDI data handling, interfacing with external equipment?

  1. Midi> Channels, Master or Slave (1 to 16)
  2. Receive midi
  3. Utilitiy Mode

You should be able to control what midi channels the internal sounds receive or playback. Find the master midi channels of the QY300, make it only respond to example: channel 16 then avoid using that channel in your MIDI tracks.

Yamaha have quite a lot of documentation for this on their site - have you looked at all this?

https://uk.yamaha.c…

If this doesn't solve your problem - what exactly are you struggling with? People used these quite happily in the early days as a basic sequencer that just had a decent synth on board - you could use the synth, driven from outside, or send the MIDI data to other devices from it?

You're perhaps reading things into the manual that are now done differently. In essence, as Chris says - you have 16 channels out and 16 channels in - so the internal synth will respond to the channel you have programmed sounds into - and ignore everything else. It's all about MIDI channels, not devices. Now, we send to devices, but back then where you had loads of devices all daisy chained, the secret was usually preventing devices responding to messages not meant for them - like we do now with DMX lighting.

Thank you very much. I had a QX21 for many years and it worked very simple. Select channel, hit record, bounce tracks, and that's it. This is a whole different beast. I'll certainly look into the master/slave settings.

Thank you for the link. I've read all there is before, and that's what was frustrating. There was no clear description how to record external gear. So I'll be looking at the utility settings as previously posted. I used a QX21 for many years, and it was so simple compared to this. I'll have to look a bit harder at what "isn't " in the manuals.
