I'll be recording some bugle tracks as part of a session this weekend. Wondering if anyone has had experience with tracking a bugle...I'm assuming the same rules that apply to trumpet could be followed? It is an eclectic and very experimental band who specializes in, as they put it, 'structured chaos', so any tweaky ideas are welcome.
Thanks in advance!

I use a Beyer M160 ribbon on a regional jazz trumpeter. 43 is also correct in saying that you need to put a bit of air between you and that mic to not only capture the timbre, but also to protect the ribbon. Another decent horn mic is the E-V RE20. Less "warmth", but a LOT more rugged.

I couldn't have put it better than Moonbaby! I love the Beyer M160 HyperCardioid and/or M130 figure 8. Get one of each and you are ready to go for fabulous MS stereo recordings! I use that combination on orchestras and choirs all the time. Either way, you will want them just a few inches away from the bell. Remember, NEVER BELOW INTO A RIBBON MICROPHONE!!! YOU WILL KILL IT!
Another suggestion would be any of the larger diaphragm dynamic bass drum microphones. Electro voice RE20/27 or the Sennhieser D112 also the Shure Beta 52 I believe? Nicer sounding than their smaller siblings.
I find the condenser sound like the 414 a little too blatty.

CM,
You are correct that the same general rules apply to bugle as trumpet. A good ribbon mic or a 441 a meter or so back from the bell, slightly off axis, does a good job for me.
